Key Stage 2

Key Stage 2 covers the education of children aged 7-11. It includes Year 3 (ages 7-8), Year 4 (ages 8-9), Year 5 (ages 9-10) and Year 6 (ages 10-11).

In Key Stage 2, your child will be taught all the National Curriculum subjects.
To provide your child with a sense of achievement having reached and passed required standards.

  • To help schools target their resources where they're most needed.
  • To give the Government a good idea whether the education system is working properly and children are progressing well (particularly in the core subjects: English, Maths and Science).

At the end of Key Stage 2 your child is expected to achieve Level 4 of the National Curriculum. These levels are a benchmark that can show what your child has learned and how they have progressed.

Subjects

There are three core subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science

Your child will also study these Foundation Courses:

  • Information & Communication Technology (ICT)
  • History
  • Geography
  • Modern Foreign Languages*
  • Design & Technology (D&T)
  • Music
  • Art
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Religious Education
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), and/or Citizenship

Your child doesn't have to study Modern Foreign Languages until Key Stage 3 (11-14 years old, Years 7-9) but some schools have introduced them into their Key Stage 2 curriculum. Indeed, experts believe that the earlier children start learning a foreign language the easier they will find it.
